Sherana Harriette Frances (printmaker/painter, author) lives and works in Marin County, California. Her interest in the human figure began with stick-figures in kindergarten and continued unabated at the San Francisco Art Institute (where her figures acquired a bit more flesh). Her introduction there to printmaking led to a love affair with stone-lithography and then to the acquisition of two lithography presses and the l974 founding of “Artist’s Proof Graphics Workshop”, now in Greenbrae. In the l980’s she was accepted as one of 8 worldwide applicants on the basis of experience, for advanced study at the renowned Tamarind Institute of Lithography, University of New Mexico, Albuquerque, N.M., where she earned her Professional Printer’s Certificate.
A former College of Marin printmaking-faculty instructor and University of the Pacific Extension Life Drawing instructor), she has served as Guest Curator for the Marin Arts Council, Guest Lecturer and Juror for various art groups, and on the Board of Directors of the California Society of Printmakers. Her exhibition record of almost 50 years includes the “Americana-Bicentennial, l976 Invitational”( Museum of Modern Art, S.F.), and other invitational, solo and juried exhibitions at the three major Museums of San Francisco, as well as at The Chung-Sun National Gallery, Taiwan; Barbicon Art Center, London, U.K.; Pratt Graphics Center, N.Y.; The Triton Museum, Santa Clara, Ca., New School for Social Research, N.Y.; Brandst-Klaenfabrik Museum, Funen, Denmark; Institut Franco-Americain, Renne, France, et al. She is a past winner of the James D. Phelan Award in Painting, Legion of Honor Museum, S.F.; and recently, the “Rhonda Archbold Memorial Award “ (Haggin Museum, Stockton, Ca.).
She is the author of “Drawing it Out: Befriending the Unconscious” (MAPS Publ., 2001)
